GLENISLA to AUCHALLATER

Today’s walk crosses the hills between Glen Isla and Glen Callater and the Caenlochan Nature Reserve taking in the ascent of Tom Buidhe or Cairn of Claise on the way.
The walk commences at Auchavan Farm at the head of Glen Isla (NGR.191.696) where the track continuing up the glen towards Tulchan Lodge is followed. After passing the Lodge the track continues past Bessie’s Cairn and reaches the ruined building at the bottom junction of Caenlochan Glen and Cannes Glen.
Here the two routes described below separate.
(1)Those heading for Cairn of Claise climb up on to the plateau at Caderg (NGR.198. 770) before heading north westwards round the eastern slopes of Druim Nor and climbing to the summit of Cairn of Claise (1064m.,3489ft.).
From the summit descend northwards towards the col at the head of Coire Kander and follow the rim of the corrie north westwards to pick up a path coming down from Carn an Tuirc and descending northwards towards the north end of Loch Callater and the bridge over the burn at the outlet of the loch. Cross the bridge and take the road past Lochcallater Lodge heading down the glen to Auchallater where the Bus will be parked. (NGR.156.883).

(2)For the route over Tom Buidhe the path up Cannes Glen is followed to its bead where the climb up the Cannes Burn leads on to the plateau about NGR.207.776. From there the summit of Tom Buidhe is about a mile north eastwards (957m.,3138ft.). From the summit head northwards rounding the eastern slopes of Tolmount to pick up the right-of-way path coming up from Glen Doll at the north end of Crow Craigies. This path then heads down into Glen Callater and follows the burn to the end of Loch Callater. The path along the north east shore of the loch is followed to reach Lochcallater Lodge where the road down the glen is taken to reach Auchallater where the bus will be waiting. (NGR.156.683).
